Very interesting things about the blogger who is embedded with the "with Marines along the Syrian border (according to the WP report, though apparently the man caught a ride to Mosul as his latest post at his blog shows)".

One needs to ask who supplied the $30 k for Mr. Roggio's trip. Such a payment could be hidden monetary support for the Bush administration as Roggio's are manly but syrupy sweet paeans to the wonderful war in Iraq effort. (You can find a link to the 4th Rail at online report on the embedded blogger.

The Fourth Rail even still has the donation link up for sending Roggio to Iraq, though the man has been there for some time.

Who is donating? We don't and won't know. Any right wing person or corporation could dump money there to support the president and Republican members of Congress.

Obviously there is a FEC and possibly an IRS issue there with a guy collecting money for a major operation to write pro administration propaganda.

Let's see if any action is taken by the federal government.

Or we could go watch paint dry. We'd probably see faster evidence of action on the paint drying expedition.

Another point here is that Mr. Roggio's post are in English. These are not attempts to influence Iraqi newspapers. In fact their intent is clearly to influence Americans.

Let's revisit what we know of the Lincoln group's efforts to implant propraganda in the Iraqi press at the cost of 300 million taxpayer dollars for little more than a year's work.

Let's repeat that $300 million taxpayer dollars for little more than a year's work.

It has been reported that Dan Rather made $2.5 in his last year at CBS.

So they could have had 120 Dan Rathers for that money.

This is "Your Money", Folks!!

Where is it really going?

Write your Congress people until you find out.

Buddy, how shall I put this delicately? Oh, yeah: you're an idiot. I'm one of those folks who helped out Bill Roggio. I kicked in $25 and have the PayPal receipt to prove it. Needless to say, there are undoubtedly several hundred, or even thousand, other folks who can also produce their PayPal receipts. But then, I suppose believing in secret government conspiracies gives meaning and enrichment to your life.

Here's a cordial tip: put away the tin-foil hat and stop looking out your window for the "black helicopters." Just do what most people do: grow up and get a life.

Dear feleg,

>One needs to ask who supplied the $30 k for Mr. Roggio's trip.

I'm at a loss to know how you'll get an answer to your question that's both truthful and meaningful. But perhaps you knew before you :

>Such a payment could be hidden monetary support for the Bush administration as Roggio's are manly but syrupy sweet paeans to the wonderful war in Iraq effort.

I contributed to Roggio's efforts--nowhere near as much as my charitable donations for the tsunami etc., but enough to make a difference. I hope. I'm not affiliated with a political party.

My concern with events in al-Anbar were fueled by my nephew's service in the region in the 3rd ACR. In his posts over the past year (prior to the recent trip to Iraq), I found that Roggio did a masterful job of synthesizing open-source reports to give a sense of the battlefield. This included the Order of Battle of both Coalition forces and the insurgency. It included comments on both sides' tactics and strategy. It included evaluations of our victories and our losses ("our" means "the US and the Iraqi Gov't."). Roggio linked all of his sources. All of it was freely available to the newspapers of record, et al. They chose to disregard almost everything that he covered.

From reading widely, from seeing the flow of events develop, and from email correspondence with my nephew, I became convinced that Roggio was reporting honestly, truthfully, and perceptively. I think this view will be further supported as more becomes known over time.

Of course, neither you nor other readers have an easy way of determining the truth of what I've written here. Perhaps this is exactly the story that you'd expect a paid operative of the VWRC would fabricate.

Well, you are urging folks to "Write your Congress people until you find out": I'm not clear what it is that you want. To protect me from being 'duped' into making contributions to writers you disagree with? To end financial privacy, so that all non-charitable transactions are placed into the public record? To demand the end of viewpoint diversity?

By the way, I found your blog by way of a post at The Belmont Club. You might find Wretchard's reflections to be interesting. Here's the URL:

I contributed a small piece, am not part of a large conspiracy and don't know anyone else who contributed. I felt personally responsible to contribute for someone who was making such a personal sacrifice. I also made contributions to the Asian Earthquake and Tsunami victims along with contributions to Hurricane Dennis, Katrina, Rita and Wilma victims.
